2009 Legislative Update - #1

Session gets underway...New Committee Assignments...New Ways to Contact Rep. Burgess...

Happy New Year!

The 2009 Legislative Session is underway in Topeka.  I am excited to once again to have the honor of serving you and our neighbors in the 51st House District.

With each new term come many changes.  In the Kansas House of Representatives, we have new leadership on both sides of the aisle, several new members, new committee assignments and new offices.

Committee Assignments
For me, changes this session include two new committees: the House Energy and Utilities Committee and the House Government Efficiency and Fiscal Oversight Committee.  These committees will undertake a number of important issues and I am looking forward to working on both.

I will continue to serve on the House Transportation Committee (which will debate the possibility of a new highway/transportation plan) and the Joint Committee on Information Technology.

How to contact me
I also am in a new office this year.  You will find me over in the Docking State Office Building on the 7th Floor.  I would love for you to stop by for a visit any time you are in the Capitol.  Just call my secretary, Colleen Logan at 785/296-7632 and she will explain how to get to the office. (My 2010 phone number is 785/296-7653)

Also feel free to send me an email when you have a question or concern about legislation before the Legislature: mike.burgess@house.ks.gov

Other ways to get involved and learn about the Kansas Legislature
Every year I have the privilege of hosting a number of our neighbors as they visit me at the Statehouse.  If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a Legislator or want to learn more about the legislative process, I invite you to come “shadow” me for a day.

We also have opportunities for middle and high school students who would like to be a page for the day in the House.

Please call my secretary, Colleen Logan at 785/296-7632 for more information.

2009 Session
The number one issue for the 2009 Session promises to be addressing the state’s dire financial situation.  The state faces a billion dollar revenue shortfall.  Needless to say, the Legislature and the Governor must make some difficult decisions to cut state spending.

There will be much debate on which state programs should be cut or eliminated or whether recent tax cuts should be reversed.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about balancing our state’s budget.

You also can expect more debate on a statewide energy plan, a new transportation plan and many other issues from our across state.  The 2009 Legislative Session promises to be another exciting and productive year.

As always, it is an honor to serve you.  Please do not hesitate to call or email me if I can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mike Burgess
51st House District

Mike Burgess serves north and west Shawnee County and southern Wabaunsee County, including Alma, Eskridge, Harveyville, Rossville, Silver Lake, Willard and a little bit of Topeka.
