TOPEKA LAWMAKER STRESSES NEED FOR BUDGET STABILIZATION FUND
Topeka – Kansas State Representative Mike Burgess (R-Topeka) stressed today the need for the state to establish a budget stabilization fund.
“Our economy goes through highs and lows – right now, it has hit a low and we face some difficult budget decisions,” Representative Burgess said. “By establishing a budget stabilization fund and then directing into it revenue that exceeds our needs during the good years, we will have a savings account to lean on during the difficult time – making us better prepared for a down turn in the economy. A government that is more stable in funding will be able to operate more efficiently.”
Rep. Burgess said the key to the fund will be to require legislative action to re-fund it when possible.
“Obviously, this is a tough budget year, but I think it is important to create the statutory framework for the fund so we create a process to put money aside during the good years,” Burgess said.
Establishing a budget stabilization fund is part of the Kansas House Republican Caucus 2009 Agenda announced today. Burgess said he look forward to working with his fellow lawmakers on this legislation.
